— -- When rocker Dave Navarro was a teen, his mother and aunt were murdered by his mom's then-ex-boyfriend.

The experience still haunts him.

"I don't know if there's ever a day when you're healed, repaired," he told HuffPost Live. "But to have a deeper emotional understanding and a deeper psychological understanding, I definitely feel more at peace with things [now]. For sure."

Navarro, 47, a guitarist for Jane's Addiction, said that one thing that helped him was working on a documentary focused on the murder. The experience of making the film, which was self-funded, he said, helped him better understand how the experience affected him.

"A lot of trauma survivors have the cloud of trauma with them forever," he said. "It may get easier to deal with. It may get lighter, it may lessen, but it's always there."

It also inspired him to take part in Mariska Hargitay's "No More" anti-domestic violence campaign. At the time that he and his family were coping with the "worst-case scenario in a domestically violent world," those types of PSAs didn't exist, he noted.

"We didn't have the Internet. We didn't have have the means of communication that we have today, and we didn't have such a broad reach in terms of getting a message out. So of course I'm happy to be a part of that," he said. "It's important to get the word out there, and that there is help and there's solutions and there are places to go [for] men and women."
