— -- Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences, court papers show. But it seems that the pair had been spending ample time apart in the months leading up to the announcement of their split.

The celebrity power couple started dating after meeting on the set of their 2005 movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and now have six children together. Jolie Pitt has filed for physical custody of children -- Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.

One of the last photos taken of the couple in public was on July 4 as they were leaving Gelson's Market in Los Feliz, California. The last time they were pictured together was reportedly on July 12, when the family celebrated Knox's eighth birthday at The Griddle Cafe in West Hollywood, according to TMZ.

Since then, Jolie Pitt, 41, has been hard at work overseas. She was last photographed in public on Sept. 9, when she held a press conference during a visit to the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. There, she asked world leaders to put the conflict in Syria -- and what it will take to end it -- at the center of discussion at the United Nations General Assembly, which began today.

Days before Jolie Pitt's visit to the refugee camp, Pitt, 52, traveled to Croatia to visit the development site for a $1.5 billion luxury resort in the small coastal town of Zablace, People reported. He is rumored to be investing in the property.

The last time Pitt was last photographed in public was at Los Angeles International Airport on July 24.

Before that, he was in the news in May, when he came to the rescue of a little girl in Spain's Canary Islands while there shooting his upcoming World War II film "Allied." The girl appeared to be in danger of being crushed by a crowd of eager fans, and Pitt noticed her being pushed up against a fence before rushing over to help her. That same month, Jolie Pitt was appointed as a visiting professor for the London School of Economics, The Guardian reported.

Last year, the couple starred together in "By the Sea," in which they played a glamorous couple whose marriage was on the rocks. The film was directed by Jolie Pitt. In a 2014 interview with The Associated Press, Jolie Pitt said it was cathartic to play a couple with marital problems.

"It almost makes you get past those issues because you can laugh at them," she told The AP. "You do a film about bad marriage and you witness that behavior. You study it, you let it out, you attack each other and then you just want to hold each other and make sure you never behave that way."

The couple reportedly celebrated their second anniversary in August with a "low-key date night" at the Beverly Hills Hotel, according to Us Weekly.
