— -- After performing "The Sound of Music" medley at the Oscars and winning a Grammy for her jazz album with Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga was ready to return to her freaky-deaky roots.

The 29-year-old singer, whose nickname is Mother Monster, rang up "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy and told him what a huge fan she is of the show.

"I called him and I said, ‘Ryan, I wanna be on 'Horror Story.’ And he goes, ‘OK.’ And that was it," Gaga told the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, which features her on the cover.

Gaga gave the magazine an inside look at her starring role in "American Horror Story: Hotel," the fifth season of FX's award-winning anthology.

"I’ve just been weeping while I’m here because I have returned to something I’ve believed in so much, which is the art of darkness," the "Bad Romance" singer said. "It’s not something that everyone understands, but, for the people that do -- 'Horror Story' fans, my fans -- there is a true connection between us, and it’s a language within itself."

Gaga plays the Countess, the blood-thirsty owner of the Hotel Cortez, alongside regulars Matt Bomer, who plays her blood-hungry lover; Kathy Bates, who plays Donovan's mother and a front-desk clerk; and Sarah Paulson, who returns as addict Hypodermic Sally.

Murphy recalled Gaga's first day on the set.

"She showed up, and she was wearing diamond pasties, a Band-Aid on her boo-ha, heels and a black veil that Alexander McQueen made for her on the day before his death," Murphy told EW. "Then the crew gasped in delight, and we were off!"

Joining the cast has been a dream come true for Gaga, who is engaged to "Chicago Fire" star Taylor Kinney.

"I always wanted to be an actress," she told EW. "I was terrible at auditioning. I would clam up. I was very awkward. I wasn't particularly pretty in high school. I was sort of ... blooming. Now I'm here."
