— -- Comedian Bill Murray received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, and Steve Martin were among the celebrities who made appearances at this star-studded event. But it was Miley Cyrus’s performance that stole the show after an on-stage slip-up.

The day after the platinum-selling artist hit the campaign trail for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Virginia, she took to the stage to honor Murray.

Cyrus started off her special rendition of “My Way” with spunk and confidence. But it soon came crashing down when she botched the words to the song and riddled the rest of her performance with expletives.

“I got too stoned,” the singer explained to the audience. “I smoked too much and forgot.”

Murray laughed it off and shouted to the audience from his seat in the balcony, “This is happening right now in Washington D.C., the 51st state in the union."

Keeping the crowd lighthearted, Murray, 66, suggested Cyrus try the song again. The 23-year-old songstress came back on stage for the second time and performed the song without messing up the words. This version will be broadcast Friday on PBS.
