Oasis' '(What's the Story) Morning Glory' Turns 20
"Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" were both on the album.
— -- Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have reason to celebrate together on Friday, though it's highly unlikely that they will.
Oct. 2 marks the 20th anniversary of the U.K. release of "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" by their band, Oasis. It was the British rockers' most commercially successful album, selling 22 million copies worldwide on the strength of hits like "Wonderwall," "Don't Look Back in Anger" and "Champagne Supernova."
Oasis' popularity in the United States exploded after "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" -- the follow-up to their debut album, "Definitely Maybe" -- hit stores. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 album chart and has gone four-times platinum.
Noel Gallagher, the lead guitarist for Oasis, wrote all of the songs on "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" He recalled that the initial reviews for the album weren't especially positive. Even he didn't realize how successful it would become.
"I remember leaving the studio not thinking that we'd created anything particularly special," Gallagher told ABC News earlier this year. "We spent 16 working days on it, which is nothing."
Similarly, Gallagher didn't have high expectations for "Don't Look Back in Anger," the only track on "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" for which he provided lead vocals. His younger brother, Liam, sang the other songs.
"You know, the thing with 'Don't Look Back in Anger' is I wrote that song in Paris in 1994 on a rainy night after an Oasis gig, which we played at a strip club," Gallagher shared. "And I came back, and I wrote the song and I went to sleep and I got up the next day and I seen the words and I remembered the song and I played it and I thought, 'Oh, that's pretty good. That'll work for the next record.' I never thought anything of it."
Now, Gallagher appreciates the impact "Don't Look Back in Anger" has had on his fans. "I'm very f***ing aware of what it means to the people, and 'Champagne Supernova' and 'Wonderwall.' I've felt that for the last 20 years," he said.
Oasis recorded five more studio albums after "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" The group disbanded in 2009 following a well-publicized fight between Gallagher and his brother, whose relationship remains strained to this day.
Still, Gallagher, who now makes music and tours under the moniker Noel Gallagher's "High Flying Birds," has fond memories of the "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" era.
"They were great, great, great, great days," he said. "They didn't last very long, but they were f***ing good while they did last."
