— -- Everyone remembers when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards to tell her she didn't deserve her Best Female Video honor.

They've since patched things up, which Swift attributes to their mutual friendship with Jay Z.

"I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along," she told Vanity Fair. "It started with both of us really liking Jay and wanting him to be happy."

Swift, 25, and West, 38, eventually developed mutual respect for each other -- something the "Style" singer said was necessary for their own friendship to form.

"Then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing," she added.

However, her relationship with West is hardly front and center in her life. Instead, Swift's famously close with a group of women, each of whom is accomplished in her own right -- from models Karlie Kloss and Gigi Hadid to singers Lorde and Selena Gomez.

"We even have girls in our group who have dated the same people,” she said. (Swift once dated Hadid's current beau, Joe Jonas.) “It’s almost like the sisterhood has such a higher place on the list of priorities for us. It’s so much more important than some guy that it didn’t work out with.”

"Now more than ever we need to be good and kind to each other and not judge each other," she continued, "and just because you have the same taste in men, we don’t hold that against each other."
