— -- Victoria Beckham knows she often looks unhappy in photos, but there's a reason.

"When you're in a position to be paparazzi-ed just walking down the street, you'd look a little daft if you were smiling all the time,"she told The New York Times T Magazine. "[But] I smile in family photos."

And that makes sense, too. Beckham, 39, who runs her own eponymous fashion line, is married to soccer star David Beckham, 38, with whom she has four children, Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 10, Cruz, 8, and Harper, 2. Life as a "working mum" is pretty idyllic, she said.

"David does the cooking. ... He's really good," the fashion designer told the magazine. She explained that when he was playing soccer in Italy and his family was in Los Angeles, he brushed up on his skills. "He decided to go to culinary school!"

The two also are very involved with their children's extracurricular activities, she said, and try to keep them as grounded as possible. However, sometimes life in L.A., where they lived for a bit, made that difficult.

For example, "We have what I consider to be normal birthday parties," she said. "I've been to parties in L.A. that are mind-blowing. I mean, quite literally mind-blowing. People get cell phones in the party bag, that sort of thing. Fabulous, fabulous parties. Ours aren't like that. They are normal kids' parties. We'll have a bouncy castle, a face painter."

She has a similarly down-to-earth attitude about her own appearance, though she seems to be very self-aware of her image, declining to have food in her Times photo shoot.

"We don't want anyone to know I eat," she said. "Why ruin that?"

Still, "I don't want to be made to look like I'm 25," she told the magazine. "I'm 39. I don't have any issues with my age."
