Transcript for Aspen Socialite on Trial for Husband's Death
The aspen socialite on time for killing her ex-husband with a car bomb. Pamela Phillips maintains her innocence but prosecutors say they can prove she's a killer even though it's taken more than 17 years to bring her to trial. ABC's linsey Davis has that story. Nearly two decades, robin. This is after Gary Triano's death in 1996. His ex-wife now on trial for his murder. The defense claims Triano made a lot of enemies in the casino business. But the prosecution says the only person who benefited from his death was his ex-wife. A materialistic murderer or an innocent socialite falsely accused of a crime she didn't commit. She was having troubles with Gary Triano. Reporter: Prosecutors say 56-year-old Pamela Phillips was accustomed to a lavish lifestyle filled with fancy cars and expensive homes during her marriage to commercial real estate developer Gary Triano. And when that fortune began to dwindle after their contentious divorce, they say Phillips hired a former boyfriend to kill her former husband with a car bomb, so she could allegedly collect on his $2 million life insurance policy. She was that frustrated and angry with things going on. Reporter: Phillips and Triano were married with two children. But divorced when according to prosecutors Triano could no longer support Phillips' extravagant lifestyle. Phillips then moved to aspen and met Ronald young whom prosecutors say she paid $400,000 to kill her husband. She made statements to her friends that she could have Gary taken out. Reporter: It was back in 1996, Triano had just finished a round of golf with a friend at a nearby Tucson country club when he approached his car, a pipe bomb went off inside it killing him almost instantly. The only person that actually benefited from Gary Triano's death was Pamela Phillips and the man that she hired to plant that bomb. Reporter: After Triano's death, Phillips collected $2 million from her ex's life insurance policy and moved abroad where according to prosecutors she continued to live the high life, but in 2009 she was arrested in this luxurious hotel in Austria and ever since has spent her nights in a jail cell awaiting trial. Phillips has pleaded not guilty to charges of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit first degree murder. Back in 2010 her former boyfriend, 71-year-old Ronald young was convicted for Triano's murder and sentenced to two life term sentences. His trial likely to take several more weeks. Something else. It is. Have a good weekend. Thank you very much.
