sudden accident at the state fair in north carolina. Five injured. And in the hospital after an apparent malfunction overnight on the vortex, a ride that spins and flips passengers upside down. Abc's david kerley is there for us. Good morning, david. Reporter: Robin, it was a frightening night here at the north carolina state fair. The midway is dark behind us, as you would expect at this hour. Of the five people injured, three are still in the hospital. One is critical, after that ride malfunctioned and threw them to the ground. This morning, abc news has obtained this video, showing the moments just after the accident. First responders quickly arriving on the scene, tending to the injured. The vortex ride seen in this video right before the accident, spins and twists, flipping its riders upside down. The ride had stopped. And they were fixing to offload when it started off again. Reporter: As soon as it restarted, people were thrown from the ride. They fell probably at least 20 feet. We could see at least three people laying there, nonresponsive. People were trying to see if they were okay. But none were moving. Reporter: The victims range in age from 14 to 39 years old. Some of them, members of the same family. And among those injured, one of the operators of the ride. We had a ride operator and all the people that were working on the ride, being interviewed at this time. Reporter: This isn't the first tragedy at the north carolina state fair. 11 years ago to the day, back in 2002, an operator was killed after accidentally falling into the path of this ride, the bonsai, seen here in this youtube video. A spokesperson for the north carolina state labor department said the vortex ride is supposed to be inspected for safety three times a day during the annual fair. Our thanks to david kerley.
