Transcript for Victoria Duval, 17, Wows at US Open
And an amazing upset last night. I love this story. We love a good tennis match. And, boy, did we get one last night. An astonishing match by a teen phenom. It felt like she came out of nowhere. But it didn't take long for the entire crowd to get behind her. She is the new darling of the u.S. Open. She does the unlikely and the improbable. 17-year-old american, victoria duval. Ranked 296 in the world. Playing her second grand slam tournament. SHOCKING 11th-RANKED 2011 U.S. Open champion, sam stosur. By pulling out a victory in last night's nail-biting three-set match. The teenager, who says she just wants to have fun, certainly showed it with her infectious personality. This is the best I've played in my career. So, I'm really excited. Reporter: Duval was born in miami. But grew up in haiti until 7, when they moved back to the u.S., After duval and her cousins were held hostage by armed robbers. In 2010, her father was buried alive during the haitian earthquake, where he was operating a medical clinic. Duval told cnn what it was like. He got a call from him. He was in the house. He was sort of giving us his last words. He said to my mom, tell the kids I love them and all that stuff. And my mom just collapsed on the floor. She said, no, you're going to make it. Reporter: When she started playing tennis, duval said her goal was to beat her older brothers. The crowd helped me a lot today. Thank you. Reporter: If she keeps playing like this, her fairy tale run might result with a u.S. Open trophy firmly in her grasp. Wouldn't that be great? You can watch much more tennis on espn2 tonight. So far, so good. I know. Great story. Thanks, lara.
