— -- I'd like actually to mention both my research, but the research that our group is doing as well.

In terms of my own research, my research is focused almost exclusively on childhood pain and its treatment using both techniques that are related to regional anesthesia, that is the introduction of local anesthetic near nerve structures to numb them in various applications: chronic pain and acute surgical pain being the primary important ones in my research. I also do a number of studies that are evaluations of new drug products, or the use of old established drug products in adults for the use of treating pain in children. So we're looking at primarily the use of local anesthetic techniques, and the application of pharmacology in the management of pain in children.

Our group in general, though, is involved in much more than that. Besides the pharmacologic applications that I mentioned, our group is actively pursuing the use of acupuncture for the management of pain, the use of acupuncture for side effect management such as nausea and vomiting, and the use of acupuncture for the management of opioid or narcotic tolerance and dependence in children.

In addition to that, we have active research programs looking at the psychologic manifestations of pain, and the use of what we call non-pharmacologic pain techniques such as biofeedback, relaxation, and hypnosis in the management of pain in children.
