Anthony Weiner's plea on Tuesday for public forgiveness for his latest tawdry sexting revelations triggered a chorus of calls for the disgraced former congressman to withdraw from the New York City mayoral race.

Some calling for Weiner to quit the race are rivals who were trailing Weiner in polls released before Tuesday's remarkable news conference, but others are non-political observers.

Here is a sample of the outcry over Weiner's behavior:

1.
The New York Times Editorial Board

Excerpt from Mr. Weiner and the Elusive Truth: At some point, the full story of Anthony Weiner and his sexual relationships and texting habits will finally be told. In the meantime, the serially evasive Mr. Weiner should take his marital troubles and personal compulsions out of the public eye, away from cameras, off the Web and out of the race for mayor of New York City.

2.
The Wall Street Journal

Excerpt from The Anthony Weiner Show: Lewd tweets aside—there's a line we never thought we'd write— Anthony Weiner ought to drop out of the New York City mayor's race simply because of what he's forced his wife to endure. Watching the elegant Huma Abedin stand next to her man Tuesday as he explained his latest sexually charged online exchanges was painful for a normal human being to watch. Mr. Weiner is not a normal human being.

3.
New York Daily News

Exerpt from Why Weiner Must Go: Weiner's dishonest, impulse-driven psyche is once more stripped as naked as the images of his texted private parts...He is not fit to lead America's premier city. Lacking the dignity and discipline that New York deserves in a mayor, Weiner must recognize that his demons have no place in City Hall...He needs now to announce, loudly and clearly, that voters should bypass the name of Anthony Weiner, which at this late juncture is locked onto the Democratic primary ballot.

5.
Sonia Ossorio, President of the National Organization for Women, NYC

"As if we didn't already have enough evidence of Anthony Weiner's utter lack of judgment, impulse control and honesty, these latest revelations show the degree to which his candidacy distracts us from the important business of choosing the next leader of New York City. He is clearly and compellingly unfit for public office and the sooner he comes to this realization, the better for the people of New York."

6.
Bill de Blasio, New York City Mayoral Candidate

"Enough is enough. I'm calling on Anthony to withdraw from this race — for the good of the city that I know he loves as much as all of us." - via Twitter @deBlasioNYC

7.
George McDonald, New York City Mayoral Candidate

"New tweets, same old Weiner.Throughout his time in public life Weiner has demonstrated neither the judgment or the character to be our Mayor" - via Twitter @McDonald4NYC

8.
Sal Albanese, New York City Mayoral Candidate

"From the moment he entered the race, I've said that Tony Weiner was unfit to serve as Mayor of our great city...Unfortunately, my other opponents have danced around the issue. I'm not going to do that. I'm calling for Anthony Weiner to do right by New Yorkers and withdraw from the race." - via official statement

9.
John Catsimatidis, New York City Mayoral Candidate

"Anthony Weiner should do what is right for his family and our city and drop out of the race for mayor so we can end this soap opera." - via Twitter @JCats2013

10.
Christine Quinn, New York City Mayoral Candidate

"The circus that Mr. Weiner has brought to the mayor's race these last two months has been a disservice to New Yorkers who are looking for someone who has the judgment and maturity to lead this city and a record of actually delivering real results for them."
