Trade Grades: Is Chriss worth the haul for Suns? Good deal for Kings?

The Deal

— --

Kings get: Picks Nos. 13 and 28 (Georgios Papagiannis and Skal Labissiere), rights to  Bogdan Bogdanovic and 2020 second-round pick

Phoenix Suns: B-

The Suns paid heavily to move up five spots in the draft. Based on the average value of each draft slot and the current cap projections, I estimate the 13th and 28th picks at about $16.4 million combined, which puts them somewhere between the value of the fifth and sixth picks.

That doesn't consider Bogdanovic, the 27th pick of the 2013 draft who has continued to play in Europe with Fenerbahce. The Arizona Republic reported yesterday that Bogdanovic passed on the opportunity to come to Phoenix this year, which could pay off financially. If he comes over next season, Bogdanovic will no longer be bound to his rookie-scale contract and can sign for any amount.

Bogdanovic doesn't have star potential, but he projected as a rotation player next season at age 24, so his rights certainly have some value.

Still, the Suns' stockpile of draft picks and young players put them in good position to move up in the lottery. The biggest question here is whether Phoenix can successfully develop two young stretch-4s after adding Chriss to Dragan Bender, whom the Suns chose ahead of Chriss at the No. 4 pick.

Sacramento Kings: B

The Kings were surely hoping one of the elite guards -- Jamal Murray, Kris Dunn or Buddy Hield -- in the top eight would be out there when they picked. When that wasn't the case, I think it made sense to get value by moving down.

A local native, Chriss might have been popular in Sacramento, but the organization hasn't shown the ability to develop such raw prospects in recent seasons.
