— -- The iPod made a comeback today with the announcement of a new iPod Touch music player boasting a faster processor and a software update allowing the music player to support Apple Music, the company's new subscription-based streaming service.

It's the first time in nearly three years Apple has released a new iPod. While it was never really killed off, the iPod faded into the background of the company's gadget line-up with the rise of the iPhone doubling as both a phone and music player.

The iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano are also getting a refresh, although it's purely cosmetic. The lower-end music players will be available in five new colors, including space gray, silver, gold, pink and blue.

The new iPod Touch essentially has the same features as an iPhone but without cellular capabilities, making its beginning price point of $199 ideal for people who want an iOS 8.4 experience but without the mobile subscription.

Faster Processor

The new iPod Touch has an A8 chip -- the same one in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The new chip gives it processing power, making it ten times faster for graphics.

Better Camera

Take more vibrant photos with an 8-megapixel rear camera. Both the front and rear cameras can also take as many as ten photographs per second. Slo-mo mode can capture video at 120 frames per second.

What Makes It Different From an iPhone 6

Aside from not being equipped for cellular service, the new iPod Touch won't have all of the fancy sensors of the iPhone 6. There's no finger print ID to unlock the device. That sensor is necessary for Apple Pay, which means Apple's mobile wallet won't be found on the Touch.

What the Touch does have, however, is an M8 motion co-processor, allowing it to act as a fitness tracker.

There's also a difference in size. The Touch screen is 4-inches while the iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches and its bigger counterpart, the iPhone 6 Plus, measures 5.5 inches.
