— -- Here's something to look forward to in 2016: Faster Internet surfing on your smartphone.

Google announced that its accelerated mobile pages project -- nicknamed AMP -- is set to go live next year, with the first mobile optimized pages from a variety of publishers improving the browsing experience.

David Besbris, vice president of engineering at Google and Richard Gingras, the head of news at the search engine, said in a blog post they have received help from the outside in the six weeks since the project was announced. They reported more than 250 contributions of new code, samples and documentation have been made over the past few weeks.

Slow loading mobile pages are notorious for sucking up mobile data usage and frustrating users -- sometimes resulting in them leaving the site before a page loads. The new pages will be a boon for publishers who will have a better shot at retaining users and enticing them to interact with more content.
