4 Dead in Shooting at Calif. Tribal Meeting

A woman opened fire during an eviction meeting at an American Indian tribal headquarters in California, police said.

The shooting happened in the Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office in Alturas. The suspected shooter, Sherie Lash, 44, is in custody, police said in a press release.

Tribal members were meeting about evicting Lash – also known as Sherie Rhoades – and her son from the Rancheria, a federally recognized tribe with 35 members.

The victims range in age from 19 to 50.

Alturas Police Chief Ken Barnes said two additional victims were airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

Alturas is in Modoc County in northeast California, bounded by Nevada and Oregon. Janine Erkiaga is a real estate agent who has lived in Alturas all her life.

"We don't have things like this around here. This is rural country, God's country, and things like this just don't happen," she said.

ABC News Radio and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
