PHOENIX, Ariz. May 9, 2013— -- The first day of Jodi Arias' sentencing hearing was abruptly postponed today.

No details were immediately given as to the cause of the cancellation, but it was rescheduled for Wednesday, May 15.

There was some sense of alarm briefly when an ambulance was called to the courthouse and the press was kept outside, but the ambulance was summoned for an elderly man.

Arias was placed under a suicide watch after her verdict Wednesday following her conviction for first degree murder, a verdict that could entail a death sentence.

Arias was convicted of murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in June 2008.

Today was supposed to be the start of the penalty phase of the case, where prosecutor Juan Martinez would try to convince the jury that the murder had aggravating factors that would warrant the death penalty.
