— -- The predictions were dire: It could be the one of the biggest blizzards ever to hit New York City, dumping more than two feet, driven by fierce winds that could approach hurricane force.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio essentially ordered the city to close down for a day, issuing a travel ban for the city's roads and taking the unusual step of shutting down all mass transportation.

"Prepare for something worse than we have seen before. Prepare to be safe. Take every precaution," he said. "Now is the time to get ready for this extreme weather."

Only then what came was, well, not so extreme, at least not in New York City.

And New Yorkers didn't seem to mind: Who'd be upset about a snow day, and all the extra food they laid in to weather the storm? That will just save them a trip to the store.
