But tonight, in the neighborhood where his body was discovered in his bathroom, there is heartbreak over the loss of an actor and father. Linzie Janis is there. Good evening. Detectives have actually just emerged from the apartment, one with a bag of what looked like evidence. We're told Hoffman was found by screenwriter David Katz and a friend. Police say they responded to a 911 call from those friends at 11:36 this morning. When they arrived, 46-year-old Hoffman was unresponsive, lying on the bathroom floor. A law enforcement official telling ABC news, a syringe, still in Hoffman's arm. And there were bags of what's believed to be heroin at the scene. Officials say they are still investigating what happened and the medical examiner's office will determine the exact cause of death. In may of last year, Hoffman admitted he recently spent ten days in rehab for drug abuse, including heroin.
