Back here at home, a wild whiplash of spring weather. A heat wave in the west, a cold snap in the east. Would you believe, a traveling avalanche of ice in american back yards? Ginger zee shows us the wild weather today. It's really pushing in. Reporter: Creeping and crawling, residents here in as the blob of ice comes straight for their home. Reporter: It's almost 20 feet high in spots. I'm standing on what looks like a giant pile of snow. But as I take a step, it sounds like breaking glass. This is actually all ice that was pushed on shore from the lake behind me. It's call ice heaving and believe it or not, it can be a sign of spring. Here's how it happens. As temperatures warm and ice melts, high winds blow it from the lake to the shore. Kind of like a fast-moving glacier. This is what it looks like when ice from outside, com inside. So it came in within a minute? Within a minute's time. Reporter: Jerry brand watched it all happen. You hear that? That's the sound of melting ice. Going to be a lot more melting here. It's starting to rain and TOMORROW IT WILL BE IN THE 80s. Look at these numbers. Lows hardly above freezing. Highs on tuesday, in or near the 90s. Those kinds of record-breaking numbers have parts of the west sweltering. Several cities in california reached triple digits. Extreme ice, extreme heat.
