The CIA said it would have no comment on "any purported affiliation" with Levinson. "The U.S. government remains committed to bringing him home safely to his family," it said in a statement.
To date, the family says it has received little more than "lip service" from officials of the FBI and Obama administration.
"They've repeatedly told the family they're going to do everything they can but we've not seen that translated into action by the government," McGee said on behalf of the Levinson family.
In a statement, the FBI said, "the investigation into Bob's disappearance continues."
Asked why the family would want to reveal Levinson's role with the CIA while he is still being held, McGee said, "There's little doubt the Iranians know that he's working for the CIA."
"He's 65 years old, he's a diabetic. He doesn't have that many years left."
