— -- When "Vampire Dairies" co-stars and real-life couple Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder split last year, fans were devastated.

However, fear not: It really was amicable!

"I don’t like any kind of negativity," Dobrev told Nylon magazine for its August issue. "I try to be good to everyone, whether it’s a love, a friend, an ex."

Added Somerhalder: "She always lets me have the last fry."

Dobrev, 25, and Somerhalder, 35, were first linked in 2011, after working on their show together for two years. And while the show is nearing its end, Dobrev is excited for the professional opportunities that lie ahead.

“I always try to live in the now, but you’re always planning ahead," she said. "When I signed on at 20, I knew I’d be 26 when I got off. Not that I was afraid that I would be old. ... I love the show, but I don’t want to be defined by just the show."

In spite of all her success -- she has a comedy, "Let's Be Cops" coming out soon -- the actress still maintains that she forgets that she's famous every so often. She's also still in awe of red carpet events.

"It doesn’t feel real because I don’t live in that world," she said. "When I go to those events, I’m in town specifically for that, and then I leave later that night. I’ve maybe stayed for the after-party once, ever. It still feels like I’m a fan, in a way. A lot of people are very cynical and very jaded, but I’m not there yet.”
