Just a few months after Miley Cyrus shot down reports that she and Liam Hemsworth had ended their engagement ("I'm wearing a ring, so ..." she said on "Good Morning America"), reps for the couple confirmed that the "Wrecking Ball" singer and the "Hunger Games" star had, indeed, split.
Beforehand, though, there were plenty of signs that the couple might not make it down the aisle. Click through to see five of them.
Twitter Tells All?
First, Cyrus, an avid social media user, unfollowed Hemsworth on Twitter. Then, after their announcement on Monday, Hemsworth, 23, followed suit. For some, a simple "unfollow" might not mean much, but for Cyrus, it was telling. In 2009, she quit the social media site at Hemsworth's request, and since rejoining, she's used it as a primary way of communicating with her fans (and to vent). "I am so sick of La [sic]. And sick of the lies that come with it," she wrote in March. "I didn't call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media. #draining"
Red Carpet No-Shows
Hemsworth and Cyrus were photographed on the red carpet in August for the first time in more than a year, and the two hadn't made a public appearance together since. Earlier this year, however, the "Wrecking Ball" singer said not to read too deeply into things. "I'm not home with my boyfriend all the time. We work. Every week it's, 'Are they broken up? Because we don't see a photo of them,'" she said. "I don't have time go to Starbucks with my boyfriend every morning. I wish I did, but I don't."
A number of celebs defended Cyrus' racy performance at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, but Hemsworth wasn't one of them. According to Us Weekly, the "Paranoia" actor found her duet with Robin Thicke to be "mortifying." "He is over her and wants to make a clean break," a source told the magazine. "No more back and forth."
Cyrus Declared, 'I'm Acting Like a Kid'
In the new issue of Harper's Bazaar, Cyrus admitted that she's not necessarily looking to grow up anytime soon."I was an adult when I was supposed to be a kid. So now I'm an adult and I'm acting like a kid," she said. "There are times when I'm sitting in my big ole house and I'm like, 'I can't believe I'm allowed to be here alone.'" And although she declined to discuss Hemsworth in the interview, she did say that she does still plan to get married one day. "I definitely don't have time to deal with a wedding right now," she explained. "But I will at some point." Just not with Hemsworth.
Cyrus' Family Was in the Dark
Cyrus' famous father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus, told ABC News earlier this year that even he wasn't sure whether the couple would get married. "I don't know," he said. "They're young, they're kids. The great news is they're great friends. They're really, really good friends. If you end up getting married, that's your business."
