Stephen Colbert Says Goodbye to Jon Stewart and 'The Daily Show'

April 24, 2014 — -- With his new gig set taking over for David Letterman on the "Late Show," it was time for Stephen Colbert to say goodbye to Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show."

Colbert stopped by the set on Wednesday night to bid farewell to the friend who launched his career.

"Jon, I have some terrible news. You better sit down," he said. "Jon, this is going to come as something of a shock to you."

Then Stewart interrupted to say, "You're ending your show."

In true Colbert fashion, he responded, "I have to Jon. Don't beg me to stay. There's no mountain left for me to climb. It’s become clear to me that I’ve won television.”

Colbert, in character, even joked that the guy taking over for Letterman in 2015 was "some fat guy" -- referring to his true self.

Colbert told ABC News that he will ditch his current alter ego for his new role.

"I won't be doing the new show in character, so we'll all get to find out how much of him was me," he said. "I'm looking forward to it."

The "Colbert Report" is set to end this fall.
