8-Month-Old Baby Safe After Abduction, High-Speed Chase

Aug. 15, 2013— -- An 8-month-old baby was safely returned to his mother Wednesday after being abducted and taken on a high-speed chase in Georgia.

Police arrested Samantha Nicole Barrett, 22, who they said was speeding with little William Kaidyn Stover after she allegedly abducted him Tuesday night and stole his mother's car.

Dash-cam video from the chase shows the alleged abductor swerving dangerously before veering off I-75 in Lamar County. Police say Barrett hit speeds in excess of 90 mph before she crashed and then tried to run from the vehicle, according to ABC News Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV.

Investigators have given no possible motive for the alleged abduction. Barrett is facing kidnapping and theft charges, according to WSB. It's unclear whether she has a lawyer.

William's mother, Kristyn Howard, was reunited with her son Wednesday night and told reporters Barrett used to be her friend.

"We're enemies, now," Howard said, according to WSB. "I hope they light her a** on fire."

Police say William was abducted in his mother's car, which was sitting outside a Cartersville home Tuesday night.

"I went inside and grabbed a lighter, I was going to take my friend to the store, and come back outside the car's gone," Howard said.

Bartow County authorities issued an Amber Alert for the boy and told residents to be on the lookout for a gray 2003 Ford Taurus.

At about 1:30 p.m., police said, someone called 911 after spotting Barrett's car along I-75 in Henry County, according to WSB. Police said they tried to pull Barrett over, but she drove off along I-75 near Highway 36.

Police were able to catch up to Barrett one mile later after she crashed and tried to flee the scene, authorities said.

"I think what I heard is when she hit this pole," witness Nancy Turner told WSB. "It made a big boom sound. She was already out of the car and was running toward my house."

At some point during the chase, a man jumped out of the car and fled, but police do not know his role in the case, according to WSB. Police have not released his identity but he was taken into custody and questioned.

A group of officers stayed behind and worked quickly to free the child from the damaged vehicle, according to the dash-cam video.

"The way the car looks, I'm surprised he's alive," mom Howard said, adding that she was amazed by her son's upbeat demeanor after the ordeal.

"He is happy, as always."
